                          Essence Of Gita

By Wg. Cdr. V. B. Purang, [ Monday, February 27, 2006  ]

Gita is a complete and absolutely clear interpretation of the universal philosophy. Its message is relevant, and important, not only for Indians but for the whole world irrespective of any religion and caste.

The conversation between Shri Krishna and Arjun is a subtle representation of the interaction between the God ( Parmatma ) and the Soul ( Atma ).

Let us experience the message of Gita through some of its most important Shlokas.

         NAINAM CHHINDANTI SHASTRANI,

               NAINAM DAHATI PAWAKAH,

        NA CHAINAM KLEDAYANTYAPO,

               NA SHOSHAYATI MARUTAH.

The Soul can neither be destroyed by weapons, nor can it be burnt by fire. Similarly, it cannot be affected by adverse climatic conditions. The external factors do affect the body but the Soul has no effect of them. The Soul always remains in a state of constant stability.

           VASANSI JEERNANI YATHA VIHAYA,

               NAWANI GRIHANATI NAROPARANI,

        TATHA SHARIRANI VIHAYA JEERNA-

               NYANYANI SANYATI NAWANI DEHI.

As, we shed old clothes and put on new ones, similarly the Soul that lives in the body, leaves it when it gets old, entering a new one thereafter. If, therefore, we believe that we, represented by Soul ( Atma ) would get a new body after the death, then there will be no distress to us and the fear of death will also be gone. We can therefore continue to perform our worldly duties.

             KARMANYE WADHIKARASTE

               MA PHALESHU KADACHANA,

        MA KARMAPHAL-HETURBHUH,

               MA TESANGOSTWAKARMANI,

It is the human nature to be concerned more for the result, rather than performing the duty ( Karma ). But, while performing the duties is within our control, the outcome depends on the power that is not in our control. We must keep working, even though there may not be a visible result, despite our best efforts. We must take up another task, when one is over, as there is a certain pleasure that one gets by working. A person always bothered about the outcome, does not get true pleasure of performing his duty.

It may be concluded that if one applies the teachings of Gita in one’s life he can overcome the fears/difficulties of this life and beyond too.
