                         Green Revolution

By Richa Sharma, [ Thursday, March 09, 2006  ]

Jungles of concrete & a halo of smoke and dust..

        Where pollution greets the fatigued..

& perpetual thirst is the crave of the crust..

No, we are not talking about some god - forsaken place. That’s "Nimma Bangaluru" for you. An erstwhile garden city, fast turning into a smoke and stress city. The advances in technology and lifestyle, are taking a huge toll on the aesthetics of this once beautiful and green city. It’s high time, we take a leaf out of the books of history and refresh not just our memories but also the air of the city with the color of life, color of green.

What better way, than having, a "Green Day" itself to kick start this effort. At the onset let us decide to celebrate The Green Day in Bangalore, not just once a year but once every month. A day when all of us plant at least one sapling either in our house, colony or office premises. We should extend the adage - "Charity begins at home", further, to resonate "The green belt starts at home”!!

The Green Belts could be enhanced by allocating specific areas in and around Bangalore where no further construction would be allowed (no houses will be built, no huge offices will be set), and the regions would be developed lush and green, full of trees and plants.

The receding green lines of the existing parks and gardens merit special attention. A sense of ownership needs to be inculcated among the adjoining corporate and residential areas for the upkeep and maintenance of parks. Every corporate could look into the possibility of having a "Green - Group" with volunteers, looking to enhance the greenery in and around their office.

With ample opportunities, that are available currently in the form of vacant areas, bordering the ring roads in Bangalore, the concept of "Urban Forests" could be given greater impetus. Preventing these belts to turn into symbols of "brick and mortar" is the need of the hour.

It is therefore imperative, that the citizens of not just Bangalore but the entire country wake up and work towards building a lush, green and healthy environment. Surely such efforts will bring in the much-needed breath of fresh air to the entire nation.
