Quotas - Vote Bank Politics

By email [ Friday, August 25, 2006  ]

Sir,

Among all discussion forums in the recent past, vote bank politics has emerged as one of the key factors determining the governments decisions, when it comes to reservations. The so called elite class (upper class) or the socially privileged have blamed the government for resorting to such cheap gimmicks. However, in a democracy like India, they fail to understand that they are to share the blame equally.

To put this to perspective it would not be out of place to know how many of them have voted in the past five elections ? How many of them have taken the trouble of going ahead and getting their names added to the voters list ? How many of them have on finding the names missing, complained to the authorities ? How many of them have let their employees off to vote on the election days ? If they understand the vote bank politics, then being a mute spectator isn't going to help. Active participation in the process is the only way to get rid of this menace.
