                     The India That Cribs

By Rohit Chati, [ Thursday, May 03, 2007  ]

Driving in India – a real public nightmare, public behavior another nightmare, political instability and an attitude to go on strikes, public unruliness, and “me-first” everywhere, issues about things that least affect the common man like the kissing scene of Shilpa and Richard. This is something that is like an expected routine and taken for granted by the world’s most booming and growing economy in the Third World.

Strangely we are still the third world even though we are one of the most preferred outsourcing destinations for rest of the world. But the average Indian would be a very good critic to the entire episode. We have about 500 political leaders and I don't remember now how many other facilitators in the government, yet we are the most corrupt of the lot.

We have given the world the best doctors and engineers but mortality under any age group in our country is one of the highest and we still struggle with infrastructure and network connectivity between cities. Of course there are three things to which we have successfully blamed every thing politicians, police, illiteracy and reservation.

So should the critic Indian be called cribbing Indian?

He himself does not miss a chance to break traffic rules, bribe the monarchy, forget to vote, avoid taxes and talk about things that least concern him as long as it is in public opinion. We have seen so many directors come up with movies, which try to promote the causes that unite India.

"Gandhi", No I am not taking a political stand or supporting any political party here, but then doing the right thing in India is called “Gandhian”. I don't know if this word would also be flicked away from India and put into the English dictionary like the curry and only then we would like begin to realize that yes we lost out on Gandhi.

So this article is for those who are so lethargic to take a step and pay some one money to resolve a small problem right now and create a bigger one for every one else. I think that the principles of Gandhi have to change from “Bura mat dekho”, “Bura mat suno”, “Bura mat kaho” to “Bura mat dikhane do”, “Bura mat sunane do”, “bura mat kahne do”.

If you are not going to act as a responsible Indian and take steps now to stop cribbing, follow the rules on the road, stop bribing cops, pay fines and promise to never break the law again, then I don’t’ see how you would differ from the rest of the world. Indians are one of the best citizens all over the world because they are all suddenly aware of the foreign law and know or learn to bide by the rules, pay their fines and also are never heard of criticizing in public even though they know that they are the second grade citizens.

The irony is that we as Indians, prefer to stay abroad since there is no political responsibility that we have to live with and infrastructure is the state of the art. So now we should be called the materialistic Indian on the look out for a better life without a political view. I thought politics was born to show that we are secular and socialist and independent. Before this goes down under racism I would like to make it clear second grade citizens are immigrants to the country and nothing more.

So may be it’s time we just say Jai Hind and start everyday leading by example on everything like Gandhi.
